Teenage Sisters Hanged from a Tree After Alleged Gang Rape

Two teenage sisters from Katra village in Uttar Pradesh state, India were allegedly gang raped and then hanged from a mango tree by their rapists. The girls, one 14 and one 15 years old, had gone into the field to pee because in these rural regions of India houses don’t have toilets, nor is there public sewage system they could be connected to.

The girls belonged to the Dalit community, also called “untouchables” – considered the lowest rung in India’s caste system. They’re called “untouchables” because the Dalit culture prohibits them from interacting with others. There are 166 million Dalits in India.

Three men, two of them police officers, have been arrested on suspicion of gang-raping and killing the girls. Four more suspects are wanted with relation to the gang rape. According to Uttar Pradesh state police Superintendent Atul Saxena, autopsies confirmed the girls had been gang-raped and strangled before being hung. I wonder why the alleged rapists dressed them back up before hanging the girls.

The villagers are seen in photos sitting around the tree allegedly in silent protest over alleged police inaction in the case. They sat there to prevent authorities from taking the girls down from the tree until the suspects were arrested.

In India, gang rape is punishable by the death penalty, according to the new law enacted after nationwide protests over the fatal gang rape of a 23 year old woman on a moving bus in New Delhi. Not sure what the punishment is for falsely accusing someone of rape.
